Following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been running as is. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Java's been on its own little Mojang account island - until now. Java Edition will soon require a Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least receive a free cape for your problems.

You'll need to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system in the early part of 2021. Mojang says this is primarily to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide enhanced security, however it could also lead to improved parental control as well as chat and invitation blocking and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons. In terms of Minecraft Mods and PvP, Mojang says absolutely nothing is changing. Java and Bedrock will remain separate games. While you can still use your Java username, you may require changing your account name if you sign up for an account with a Microsoft account. You can join your Minecraft sign-ins if you already have an existing Microsoft account.

To make it easier to cope with the switch, Mojang is giving away the Java Edition's most sought-after item that was an eagle. Participating in the migration process will give you a free cape. While it will not have the Minecon exclusive patterns, it will allow everyone to feel a little royal.

While nothing is likely to change, players have concerns. Among them, the more restrictive terms of service by Microsoft could lead to bans, which could result in certain players being shut out of Minecraft.

More details are available in the official announcement and FAQ. We'll see how this shakes out in early 2021.
