When I first met the team who are creating Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I advised them that the project would be much bigger than they had imagined. Although they have years of experience in developing servers and software, running a large game like Deepworld requires a significant investment. They seem to have reached an agreement. Kickstarter was established to raise funds in the early stages of development and servers.

The group is offering a variety of prizes to those who support it, including your own personal servers and worlds, art books, and other swag, as well as the possibility of receiving your own items, a name, or even pictures in the game itself. The goal is US$20,000, all in all, and as of this writing, the guys have raised around $4,000. They say they want to continue the project on full-time and this money will enable them to do that.

I wish them all the best. Deepworld looks good and, as I mentioned when I first saw it I think the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game like this. 53vv
